What was the starting point of your journey to success?
My journey to success began at the age of 27 with a paycheck from my first job in marketing and nothing sighificant happened for a year. When I graduated from Seton Hall University in 1982 with a degree in Political Science, I honestly had no clear idea what direction my life would take. I didn’t have any major career plans, and it was actually a friend of mine, who encouraged me to try sales. At the time, I wasn’t confident that I’d succeed in that field, but I decided to give it a shot—mainly because I didn’t have any other strong opportunities on the table.
Looking back now, that decision changed everything. Over the next 30 years, I built a career I never imagined. From 1982 to 2007, I worked as a distributor for four different companies and reached top ranks in every single one. Along the way, the teams I led generated hundreds of millions in revenue.
Whether it was direct selling, recruiting, managing, or training, I poured myself into learning and growing in each role. That journey not only shaped my career—it shaped who I am.
I did not grow up with a high level of self-confidence or self-esteem,” he says. “I had a burning desire to improve in any way I could, in all areas of my life.”
What do you believe is the number one trait people need to succeed?
It’s hard to choose just one factor, but if I had to, I’d actually name two. First is the desire to succeed—without it, it’s nearly impossible to help someone achieve anything. That inner drive has to come from within. The second is discipline, combined with self-motivation. Success doesn’t come easily in any field. Desire alone isn’t enough—it must be backed by consistent effort, structure, and a willingness to push through challenges.
From my own experience, one of the most essential qualities I developed was the ability to speak confidently in public. I remember a time when I couldn’t even stand in front of a group of college students without fear. Early in my career, I had a few jobs and was fortunate to have a mentor who was a masterful speaker. I spent 20 years observing great communicators and traveled around the world to learn from the best.
The fear of public speaking is real, but success in this field goes beyond just speaking—it’s about building rapport, motivating others, and challenging people to grow.
Do you believe public speaking is a natural talent, or can it be developed over time?
In my view, the number one reason people fail in this profession is simply a lack of proper training. Being a public speaker is incredibly important, especially if you’re in a leadership role or any profession where you need to influence, inspire, or educate others. It’s not just about standing on a stage—it’s about communicating clearly, building trust, and creating connection.
As for whether you’re born with it—no, I don’t believe so. Public speaking is a skill, not a talent. Like anything else, it takes practice, discipline, and a willingness to grow.
Public speaking isn’t just about standing in front of a crowd and delivering words—it’s about building rapport, creating emotional connection, making people laugh, and sharing authentic stories that resonate with different audiences. I’ve had the privilege of speaking to large audiences across Asia, South Asia, and Africa, and I’m genuinely passionate about the craft of speaking. As someone who has dedicated years to mastering this skill, I believe in its power to create real transformation.
My goal is to take people who fear public speaking and help them become well-rounded communicators—not necessarily perfect or exceptional speakers, which isn’t always realistic unless someone has a natural gift—but confident, clear, and impactful. And that transformation can begin in just a weekend. Through workshops, practice, and real-time feedback, people don’t just learn—they evolve. It’s all about experiencing the shift in action.
